100 (+5) screengrabs

The starting point for the 100 iterations in this project were certain aspects from iterations 06 and 09 of the computational GCD project (aka. Elaborate). I wanted to develop certain aspects of image manipulation through creative coding, namely the tiling and pixellation effects I had experimented with earlier. I decided early on that I would avoid introducing new methods of manipulation and rather would focus on different ways of implementing these methods through adaptation, combination, and recursion.

Due to the seemingly random collection of images and content within computational GCD, this time I also wanted to anchor the iterations thematically. For this reason I chose to base the project on the 2000 Christopher Nolan film, Memento. I chose this film somewhat arbitrarily - perhaps I could allude to the notions of recursion, looping, and fragmentation from the narrative - but mostly because I’ll take any excuse to incorporate Nolan’s work into a project. I also decided to feature a letterform as the central subject of each iteration in order to tie the project to elements of graphic design more directly.

I set the following constraints on the work:

  1. Each iteration would be 900 x 900 px

  2. Each one must feature one letter from the word MEMENTO, in sequence

  3. Only images from a bank of 20 screenshots of the Memento theatrical trailer could be used, as well as images of previous iterations within this project

  4. The only pre-set typeface employed would be Roboto Mono

  5. Each iteration must include some change in the code

  6. The only colours to be used are black or white

The spelling of the word MEMENTO constituted one round. Within each round only certain variables within the code would be changed. Between one round and another larger shifts would occur, looking at other possible configurations of these coding systems. 15 rounds of 7 letters were carried out, totalling 105 iterations.
