The incremental designs respond to an existing interaction, rather than asking the more fundamental question of what the interaction could be.

Definitions

Liminal space

The area of overlap or interaction between two distinct areas/objects which is distinct from either of the two (eg twilight).

The aesthetic and psychological effect of experiencing a familiar space out of its normal context (eg closed supermarket).

GCD

The tools and forms that are traditionally associated with communication design and mass media (eg book, magazine, poster, film).

Computational design

The use of logic and algorithms, with their inherent constraints and freedoms, in the generation of a product, form, or experience.

Creative coding

The generation of aesthetic forms through the use of a coding language.

Interface

An interaction between a form and a user in which some transfer of information occurs.

A platform in which a ‘prompt and response’ interaction occurs.

Form

The perceptual, structural, or aesthetic attributes of a work.

Process

The methodology implemented in, and the subsequent generation of, work.

Computational design

Computational design
leads to unexpected
& hybrid forms through
an iterative process.

Within this liminal space, can these hybrid forms be used to communicate information or experiences in new ways?

Can they generate new kinds of interfaces through unpredictability?
